A complete note on Arc welding and its Process

Arc welding is a huge process wherein electric arcs concentrated heat is used for metals are joined by the parent’s fusion and all the additional metals to be added to join usually provided by a very strong consumable electrode. For an arc current used is ether alternating or a direct current, it also depends on the material and also the electrode used.

Electroslag welding is a very keen process of welding. Electroslag welding {esw} does a important work of depositing two metals into the very own weld cavity which is between the two plates which has to be joined. To enclose the space by water or copper damn or else shoes so that molten slag could be prevented from running off. An initial arc which is formed from a filler wire with a piece of work and it is done till a sufficient pool of liquid metal is formed which is also used for the molten slag s electrical resistance. This type of welding is a very huge process.

Special equipments are required for this process generally for large plates which is weld horizontal welds up to certain inches which is only done by using nuclear reactor vessels or large machinery by welding them in one pass. The ESW has variations if the shielding is provided by a very appt appropriate gas and a continuous arc where weld metal is used is provided. This are called electrogas welding .or machines of the same kind.

Fluxed core arc welding is another process of welding flux cored arc welding {fcaw} this {FCAW} uses a tabular. flux that is much less brittle than the coating on SMWA electrodes with the tabular electrodes filled while preserving bits alloying benefit most of its potential. The weld from surrounding air is shield from the emissive fluxes non emissive fluxes are employed on large scale and also shielding gases are used. The deposition rate of the FCAW over the GMAW of higher weld metals leading to its popularity to a relatively heavy section or thickness. The ease with which the specific weld metal alloy chemistries could be developed is an major advantage of FCAW and with the new robotic system especially , this process could easily automated.

Gas metal arc welding is the third of this kind. It is also called GMAW. The other name is metal internal gas or (MIG) welding. External gases such as argon, helium gas mixtures or carbon dioxide are used for the weld zone. Oxidation can completely be prevented in the weld puddle by the dioxide present in the electrode which in turn makes the multiple weld layers possible at the joint. It is a very simple and a versatile apparatus. GMAW is relatively very economically welding apparatus which is used mostly by the welders. And it is only possible because of the two welding process over SMAW the temperatures comparatively low which is suitable for thin sheets and thinner sections. It is the most easily automated process.

Tig Weld

A general introduction to the welding process   by John Peter

Welding is a fabrication process used to join metal pieces or parts together by heating the surfaces to the point of melting. Various energy sources can be used for the process, including gas flame, electric arc, laser, electron beam, friction and ultrasound. The process has been used from very older times for joining metals, but the techniques have been changing and advancing ever since.
Different techniques used:
Many different techniques have been used including arc, gas, resistance, laser beam, electron beam and lightning welding. Different techniques involving manual labor, to advanced automatic and semi-automatic methods are available. It can also be done in different environments like open air, closed room, under water and outer space. Wherever it is done, care is to be taken that proper precautionary conditions are followed. Proper helmets, gloves and jackets must be used.
Arc welding-A boon to welders:
It involves the use of electric current to join two metals. The electric current generates an arc of very high temperature which causes the metal to melt thereby facilitating welding. Different advancements have been made in the process making it even more reliable and easy. It is one of the most commonly used techniques because it is not much expensive and demands only less labor. Different types of arc welding include
* Shielded metal arc,
* Gas metal arc,
* Submerged arc,
* Flux-cored arc and
* Electroslag welding
Aluminium welding:
It is one of the difficult techniques because of the texture of aluminium. The metal surface must be clean and free of contaminations to ensure a pure joining. As the melting point of aluminium is very low, the welder must be fast and careful enough while being involved in the technique. Usually TIG welding process involving a tungsten electrode is most commonly used.
Contaminations free welding:
Metal inert gas or MIG welding, also known as gas metal arc welding is a semi-automatic or automatic process. This is a much quicker method when compared to the traditional techniques. Since an inert or semi-inert gas is used for shielding during the process, it produces a contamination free weld.
Safety First-Welding Helmets:
What comes to one’s mind when he thinks of welding? Heat, gases, fire and bright light. So a person involved in it must be protected from all these. Helmets play a major role in this as it protects the persons head. It protects a person from heat, spark and ultraviolet light. The main vital organ which gets affected easily is the eyes. Chances of the cornea or the retina getting burnt off are high. The exposed skin also gets affected due to the emission of rays and gases. The helmet must be such that it covers the person’s face, head and shoulder from burns. A standard helmet free of cracks and sutures must be selected as a damaged one does not serve the necessary purpose.

Welding is being widely used in many different industries and if proper precautionary methods are being followed, a proper contaminations free weld can be made.

Plasma cutters that are used in welding process

To produce the plasma, the pilot arc type uses two cycle, therefore avoiding the need for the initial contact. To initialize a very small unit of high intensity spark within the torch body, a high voltage and a low current circuit is used. Therefore a small pocket of plasma gas is generated. This is nothing but pilot arc. The pilot arc consists of a return electric path that is connected or built in the torch head. Until the plasma arc is not brought into the proximity of the work piece, the pilot arc maintains itself, where the main plasma cutting arc is ignites. Plasma arcs are in of all ranges and they are extremely hot. Plasma cutting arc is a well versed arc.

An effective means of cutting thick and thin materials is plasma cutting alike. Hand-held torches are capable of cutting up to two inches in thick steel plate, and the stronger computer controlled torches can also cut steel up to six inches thick. A hot and much localized “cone” is produced by the plasma cutter which is used very well for cutting the sheet metals in angled or curved shapes. Safety gadgets and steps should always be handy with the welders .welding goggles and face shield are the instrument in eye protection and they are needed to prevent eye damage .This is called arc eye and as well as damage from derby.

Starting methods is a sum of lots of small methods. Number of method is used by the plasma cutter to start the arc. By bringing the torch in contact with the work piece the arc is creates in some of the units. Some cutters make use of high voltage and high frequency circuit to start the arc. Risk of electrocution, spark gas maintain, difficulty pf repair, and large amount of frequency emission are included with large number of other disadvantages.

Lots of pilot arc starts by other means, that is when the plasma cutter works near sensitive electronic such as computers and CNC hardware the electrode and the nozzle are connected. The nozzle is known to be cathode and the electrode is known as anode. The nozzle is blown forward when the plasma gas is begun to flow. A silicon controlled rectifier is a third less common method which is processed as capacitive discharge into the primary circuit

Inverter plasma cutters are a very heavy method. 2 kilowatts is typically required by a analog plasma cutters, it uses a very heavy maintains frequency transformer. The inverter plasma cutters rectify the main to the dc supply. And it is fed into high frequency transmitter. And high frequency transmitter gives higher efficiencies in the transform process.
