Delta Airlines Ups Baggage Fees Again

Delta Air Lines announced that it will be raising fees for the first bag on domestic flights by $8 and the second bag by $7. This means that the next time you fly the world’s biggest airline, prepare to shell out $23 for the first bag and $32 for the second.

What’s more, Delta will also be adding an extra surcharge if you skip paying for the bags online and do so in person when arriving at the airport. Plan to pay an additional $2 for the first bag and $3 for the second. This lovely fee will have to be paid when checking in your bags at an airport ticket counter, kiosk or curbside.

The new fees go into effect today on tickets purchased on or after January 5 to travel in coach within the 50 states, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada and Puerto Rico. If you were lucky enough to purchase your ticket beforehand, then you are subject to the current fees of $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second.

Certain other customers, including elite frequent fliers, first class fliers and military personnel, are exempt from the fees. Delta is backing its newly priced fees by stating they are competitive with rival companies.

This is of course more bad news from the airlines. The topic of baggage fees is a hot one as pretty much every traveler hates these pesky fees. A poll last week on our
facebook
fan page asked what is the one thing you would like changed about flying. A whopping 77% said they wish baggage fees would go away.

With airlines losing so much revenue due to weak demand, those fees going away are unfortunately wishful thinking.
